Sent a cross email once I'd calmed down post-raid, basically saying 'he was incredibly patronising and I think I was never really going to be considered for the job anyway'. This is what I got back:

Hi [profile] uisgebeatha– really sorry to hear that you had a bad experience on the phone with $MD. It is weird, as $MD has been on the phone this morning singing your praises! Maybe he just didn’t realise that he came across yesterday as patronising?

$MD phoned in yesterday immediately after the call to say that he felt that you came across incredibly well, and that you are obviously bright (btw – I’m not just saying this to flatter your ego – this is actually what he said!). He agreed that you didn’t really have enough of a science background – but that he wanted to think about things overnight before making a decision on whether to take things further. He has just phoned in again this morning to reiterate that he felt that you came across really well and as you are very bright you could obviously pick things up quickly – but that having thought through what this roles needs, he is just not convinced that you would have enough of the general science grounding for this role. He did genuinely sound regretful that he couldn’t take things further though…So– I’m confused to be honest. Presumably, there was just a mismatch in what $MD “thought” he was saying – and what he did say it / how it actually came across?

My thoughts:

- Really unconvinced at this douchenozzle gushing about me to the agency guy after how I was treated last night (seriously, telling the tale made [profile] pjc50 physically wince and suck his teeth)

- I basically said I wasn't going to get this job in the email last night. Why advertise for something if you haven't decided what the skills needed are? I still can't tell if it's 're-learn GCSE physics' as per the mail from the agency guy claiming $MD's words, or 'needs a PhD'...

- Still not getting why the agency guy is defending him. I was pretty blunt about how badly I was treated. Also, it was agency man who pushed this job at both me and $MD. At what point did he think this was a shoo-in, I wonder?

He goes on to say he's not heard back from the one I really wanted (translation: he hasn't chased them up), and pushed the weird 'work from home/onsite consultancy, strip away the perks and basic salary would be £4k less than previous job' one. This is a great shame, as I've said to folk this agency is well-respected locally for tech jobs and got me a previous role. This is even the same guy I dealt with back then! What on earth has gone wrong here, and what should my next step be? Other than 'spend evening drinking crap wine and watching 1977 Top of the Pops'...

There are people of that demographic who interview in that way and admire interviewees who can stand up for themselves through it. It doesn't sound wholly implausible to me that that's what was going on, and that he was genuinely impressed at how you fielded his questioning.

I wouldn't want to work for anyone who interviewed like that, though.

Maybe he's only patronising to gurlz which is which your agency guy didn't see it.
